CESNET - Dice Project Instruction Guidelines

Welcome to the page related to the Data Infrastructure Capacity for EOSC project DICE. Here you can find basic information about the project and mainly how to get involved and request the resources.

About CESNET

CESNET is an association of universities of the Czech Republic and the Czech Academy of Sciences. It operates and develops the national e-infrastructure for science, research, and education which encompasses a computer network, computational grids, data storage, and collaborative environment. It offers a rich set of services to connected organizations.

About DICE

DICE aims to enable a European storage and data management infrastructure for EOSC, providing generic services and building blocks to store, find, access and process data in a consistent and persistent way. The DICE project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project call H2020-INFRAEOSC-2018-2020 under Grant Agreement no. 101017207.

CESNET Services - supported use cases

Under the DICE project, CESNET offers several types of services to store your scientific data. Supported access protocols described below can be used to transfer the data. CESNET supplies Object Storage resources for the DICE project.

Typical supported use cases are listed below. Do not hesitate to contact us with any other scenario, we will always help you to find the best way to treat your data.

Ceph RBD (RADOS Block Device)

Ceph RBD provides users with a network block device behaving generally as a local disk. The block device is fully managed by the user. The user can create a file system over the block device and use it in any requested way. Detailed information about Ceph RBD and its connection can be found in service documentation.

Ceph RBD is typically used the user groups who prefer to have their own data storage connected/mapped to their server resources. This typically covers the use case where you have data from a measurement device (microscopes, analyzers…) and you want to back them up. The Ceph RBD is then accessed as a storage for the backup server.

Ceph S3

CESNET S3 is a standard service provided for regular users who need a space to store their personal data. Connection, configuration and further information of CESNET S3 tools (s3cmd, awscli) can be found service documentation.

Ceph S3 is well suited for personal or group use, e.g. direct object storage. Ceph S3 is often used as a destination for backups as it is directly supported by many backup systems.
