This is an old revision of the document!
Outage of tape library in Ostrava (du4, also known as ostrava2-archive in MetaCentrum) is planned on 6 April 2020 from 7AM to approximately 5PM. Necessary update and hardware maintenance will be performed. The storage facility will be available, just the data migrated on to tapes will not recall during the outage.
We apologise for the inconvenience.
We've started on 1.1.2020 final data migration of Metacentrum users from Brno data storage (du3) to the Ostrava data storage (du4). In this moment there is no need of user action. Complete data migration will be done by administrators. In case you will find out your data inaccessible in Brno Data Storage, then the migration is done. Your files from Brno Data Storage could be then found on the Ostrava Data Storage in your home directory in the folder named “migrated_du3”.
Thank you for cooperation.
Update 5:00pm: Ostrava storage facility is back in operation.

Update 5:00pm: Ostrava storage facility (du4.cesnet.cz, ostrava2-archive in MetaCentrum) is back in operation.
Due to tape library failure in Ostrava storage facility (du4.cesnet.cz, ostrava2-archive in MetaCentrum) had the tape library to be shut down. The data center is still accessible. However in case that your data are migrated to the tape library, there won't occure migration back to the disk tier. That can cause I/O errors.
We apologise of the inconvenience.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud & FileSender services are back in operation.
Thank you for understanding and we are sorry for casused difficulties.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service is unexpectedly out of operation. We are trying hard to put it back into operation.

We would like to inform you that the ownCloud & FileSender services are currently under planned maintenance. We are performing service upgrade and necessary changes in cluster arrangement. The services should be back in operation on Thursday morning.
Thank you for understanding and we apologise for the inconvenience.
New and significantly improved version of the FileSender system has been put into operation.
New features include:
The system is available at https://filesender.cesnet.cz.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service is back in operation.
Thank you for understanding and we are sorry for casused difficulties.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service is unexpectedly out of operation. We are trying hard to put it back into operation.
Thank you for understanding and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service will be unavailable from Wednesday 29th August 2018 from 1 pm until the 3 pm. Thank you for understanding and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
We would like to inform you about typical issues with logging into ownCloud after recent upgrade and how to prevent them.
For logging into ownCloud, kindly use the same login and password from the same institution you had used before the upgrade. There is no need to worry about the button “Register” in the “New user” section in the user management system. It is not to create a new ownCloud account, just a registration to the user management system that is necessary to perform. There is no need to worry about registering additional identities now, it can be done later.
We have improved upon our documentation, please check https://du.cesnet.cz/en/navody/owncloud/start#first_logging_into_the_cesnet_e-infrastructure.
When using the desktop client, please note that version 2.4.0 or newer is necessary for the log in procedure to succeed.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service is operational again. Authentication into the system is now integrated into the CESNET e-infrastructure (it used to use the identity federation directly). Please note that following notes may be important for you.
If you have been registered in the e-infrastructure, you will observe no difference. If you have been using just ownCloud of all of our services, and/or you access it with an identity unknown to the rest of the CESNET e-infrastructure, the system will guide you through the “first login” procedure. It is just a way to get your identity into our centralised system, you shall find your data and settings in ownCloud untouched. The procedure is described in the documentation:
https://du.cesnet.cz/en/navody/owncloud/start#first_logging_in_to_the_cesnet_e-infrastructure
Client registration has been changed, too. It will no longer use special user names and passwords, but logging into a web interface. It will be necessary to register the clients again. WebDAV will have specific application passwords. We again refer to the documentation:
https://du.cesnet.cz/en/navody/owncloud/start#desktop_client
https://du.cesnet.cz/en/navody/owncloud/start#access_via_webdav_protocol
After the upgrade, a problem with some mobile clients (Android, iOS) manifested itself, preventing the clients from registering to user accounts. We are working to find a solution and you will be informed. We apologise, unfortunately, this behaviour has not occurred during testing.
Update 23. 6. 1PM: problem with mobile clients has been resolved, Log in from mobile clients should be operational now.
We would like to inform you that the ownCloud service will be unavailable from Wednesday 20th June 2018 from 8 am until the evening of Friday 22nd June 2018. We advise you to synchronise necessary files to your computers in advance. Neither the web interface https://owncloud.cesnet.cz/ nor client synchronisation will be accessible in this period.
A significant upgrade of the service will be performed and the service will be transferred to a new data storage facility in Ostrava. This operation shall also resolve poor service accessibility we have observed in past weeks.
What to expect:
Thank you for understanding and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
New Terms of Service bring relatively slight changes and clarifications. The changes partly react to current hystery related to new personal data protection legislation. The Terms do not contain factual changes, they just describe in better resolution how the services have been presented by us for years. New Terms of Service will come into effect on 9th July 2018.
We are still working on the problem of high load of the ownCloud system that manifests itself by reduced accessibility in peak times. It turned out current solution reached its limits and optimisations we have done don't keep up with current demands. The only remaining possibility is to move the system to a new hardware. It will be accompanied with upgrade to a new version and transferring to a scalable architecture, expected to resolve the issue completely.
In order to transfer the system, a series of steps must be taken. We expect them to need about two more weeks. We will soon announce maintenance time that will be technologically necessary for the final stage of consistent data and configuration transfer to the new facility.
We still suggest the users to prefer using ownCloud client over accessing the web. The client will disconnect from time to time when the server is under heavy load, it will eventually synchronise the data, though.
We would like to ask the users for patience, the process requires steps that unfortunately cannot be sped up.
We have recently observed issues with access to the ownCloud service, namely slow web interface as well as loss of connection of desktop clients. We are working on resolving those issues.
The problem is caused by sudden and unexpected increase of server load since the end of the last week. The servers are currently overloaded beyond acceptable levels. We are searching for the root cause of this state in order to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
In any case, transferring the service to a new more powerful cluster has been planned. Unfortunately, it can be done in no less than two or three weeks as the user data must be transferred there. This procedure takes significant time due to a sheer amount of files in the system. During the transfer onto new hardware, the service will also be upgraded. This shall resolve the issue completely.
We apologise for the issue and we would like to assure the users that resolving it is our topmost priority.
Currently, we suggest using desktop clients instead of the web interface. The client will tend to lose connection, but it will periodically recover, being able to synchronise the files just taking more time than usual.
We would like to inform you that a small portion of data in the hierarchical storage in Pilsen (du1.cesnet.cz) is temporarily inaccessible due to disk array shelf outage. We are waiting for the supplier to provide a spare part for the shelf. We'll inform you as soon as the data is accessible again. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Update: all data in Pilsen is accessible, the system has been completely repaired.
We would like to inform you that the hierarchical storage in Brno (*.du3.cesnet.cz, MetaCentrum mount point /storage/brno5-archive) will be out of order on 7 December 2017 from 9 AM to approximately 6 PM. The tape library will be serviced by the supplier of the system. Services of other storage facilities in Pilsen (du1.cesnet.cz) and Jihlava (du2.cesnet.cz), as well as ownCloud and FileSender access, will be not affected. We apologise for the inconvenience and hope for your understanding.
We would like to inform you that new Data Storage Terms of Service have been published on 30th November. They bring significant changes and new concepts and coming into effect on 1st January 2018. Full text can be found at https://du.cesnet.cz/en/provozni_pravidla/start.

If you use public SSH keys in the authorized_keys file to access the storage facilities and you've configured it directly on the storage facility you use, it is very likely that this file was overwritten due to an error in the user management system Perun.
If you don't use this authentication method at all or you've exclusively used Perun to set up your public SSH keys, this announcement is not relevant for you. We would like to assure you that this issue didn't affect data safety, it just cut off one access method to the storage.
Provided this announcement is relevant for you, we would like to advise you to:
Perun authors apologise for the inconvenience.
Due to a malfunction, the hierarchical storage in Jihlava (*.du2.cesnet.cz, /storage/jihlava2-archive in MetaCentrum) is currently not accessible by users. We are working to rectify the situation and we will keep you informed.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Update, June 21, 2017, 10:08: all systems are fully operational again.
Internal network failure has occurred on the Jihlava data storage facility (du2.cesnet.cz), which also affected the ownCloud service. We are closely cooperating with the system supplier to mitigate the situation. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and we'll inform you about any significant developments.
Update: all systems are up and running. There are still problems in the internal network (including hardware components that need to be replaced), therefore short outages can occur in the process. We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
A breakdown of a cooling water pipe in Pilsen university campus occured in today's early morning, resulting in the outage of the network connection as the server room must have been shut down. Storage facility in Pilsen (du1) was operational, but it was not accessible from outside network. Due to the nature and scope of the breakdown, occasional unavailability of the storage facility is expected during weekend. Our colleagues in Pilsen work hard to resolve the situation. There is no danger for the data stored there. We apologise for the issue.
We have deployed checksum system for increasing the credibility and safety of data storing on CESNET Data Storage in Jihlava and Brno (du2 and du3). Checksum system will automatically calculate checksum after you will upload your data to the mentioned data storage. Users can those checksums verify using Hasher application. Currently is the Hasher application available after logging in via ssh to the data storage. Later on in the year 2017 we plan to release Hasher application for your localhost usage. Checksum system can be used to verify the integrity of your data during the transfer between your local host and remote host. First you can calculate e.g. MD5 hash, and after you transferred your data to the remote data storage, you can use Hasher application and compare both file hashes (localhost hash vs remotehost hash). Guide for Hasher application can be found in detail documentation - CZECH ONLY.
Start since January 15, 2017 will come into effect the new Terms of Service of Data Storage CESNET. There are slight modifications comprising: - reference to the new infrastructure policy (there are only statement modifications, however meaning remains same) - better statement of the VO admin role in case of data management of expired users - explicit statement, that we can (often we must) use operation statistics in reports of infrastructure projects, which are covering our operation - other slight modifications

Outage of Jihlava storage facility (du2.cesnet.cz) has been observed last night. The outage affects both filesystem services as well as the ownCloud service. We are intensively working on the issue and we apologize for the problems.
Update: All services include ownCloud are up and running
We would like to inform you that starting from September 9, 2015, a necessary update of owncloud.cesnet.cz will be performed. ownCloud service will not be available from September 9, 8:30 AM. We expect finishing all updates by the afternoon of September 10.
Web interface as well as file synchronisation will not be available during maintenance. We recommend you to download/synchronise files necessary during the period to your local computers in advance.
We are sorry for the inconvenience. No other CESNET data storage services will be affected.
We would like to inform you that usage of personal computer ownCloud client version 1.8.1 and older is strongly discouraged with our service. The client has an error that is observed from time to time, but it can cause file corruption during file upload to the server. ownCloud clients for mobile platforms are not affected at all.
We would like to recommend you to use current version of the ownCloud client for personal computers (Windows, Linux, Mac), i.e. at least version 1.8.3.
The client usually offers update when a new version is released. You can also download current version from

We would like to inform you that usage of personal computer ownCloud client version 1.8.0 is strongly discouraged with our service. The client has an error that is observed from time to time, but it deletes the local copy of the data on the personal computer. While this error is unpleasant, there is no risk of data loss (as explained below).
How to proceed.
You can find version number of your client in Settings - General. If the version is any other than 1.8.0, everything is OK. Just don't install that version on your system.
The error should be also corrected in version 1.8.1. This upgrade has not been released yet, though.
Instead of 1.8.0, install version 1.7.1 from https://owncloud.org/changelog/desktop/
If you have observed deleting local files by client version 1.8.0, and/or you have observed any other synchronisation problems, you can force resynchronisation of the local copy of the data as follows:

New Terms of Service will come into effect in February 2015. The only change is that if a user's membership expires (for one reason or another), we will allow the user to download his or her data upon request, when necessary and, of course, if technically possible. It shouldn't be needed very often, but we are happy to assure our users that such a possibility exists.
New website of CESNET data storage services has been put into operation today. Link structure has been modified during the process, resulting in more human readable form. If your bookmarks contain direct links to the web, please update them. We promise that when updating the website again, we'll do our best not to change links again.
By the way, our ownCloud has more than 2000 users now, precisely 2131 today.
https://owncloud.cesnet.cz reached a thousand active users on 30th of June and the number is increasing.
New text of the Terms of Service has been published today. They come into effect in three months, until then the current version is valid. The Terms were mainly updated to reflect real procedures related to Virtual Organisation handling.
Hierarchical storage in Pilsen (*.du1.cesnet.cz) will be inaccessible on May 7, 2014, from 8.30 AM till 7 PM (expected). Major software patches (bug fixes) will be applied by the system vendor.
FileSender service shell be available during the outage, short periods of inaccessibility can happen though. On the opposite, ownCloud service as well as other storage facilities will not be affected.
We apologise for the inconvenience and hope for your understanding

Today was overcome by another “nice” number: storage located in Pilsen administered for 2 PB of data that is stored. This number represents cast of 1001 tapes.
This is a service for copying large amounts of data over long distances using a web interface. You can transfer data between your home directory in the data storage CESNET and the other remote repositories supporting GlobusOnline or your workstation/laptop with installed client.
You can read more in the following guide.
Users from MetaCentrum can get direct access to the data stored in Pilsen. The storage CESNET is connected to all machines of MetaCentrum. Users from MetaCentrum can use storage for storing valuable archival data.
Into resources available in a virtual organization called Storage, we added a data storage area with migration policy tape_tape. Migration policy determines to which the storage layer the data will be stored and under what circumstances it has changed.
Users from VO Storage (including already exist) was a reference to the space added to their home directories. The current policy cache_tape suited mainly for storing small data that is more vivid. Tape_tape space is suitable for storing personal backups and archives that are rarely accessed. Disk space policy tape_tape also allows you to set greater quotas for more comfortable working with large data. If the user finds quota insufficient, we can change it.
For details, see on description of migration politicies.
We changed shell for SSH access to the store in Pilsen to BASH. Its main advantages are
If you are using ssh access to the data storage in scripts, you don't need to change anything. But the new setting is more user friendly.
Detailed description of ssh access you can find in guide.
From now we are fully support HPN-SSH patch that was previously deployed on our servers. Patch brings higher speed transfer using SSH protocol. Improvements can be observed even without the application of patches on your side, but the best results are obtained by using a modified SSH client, which automatically starts using parallel AES encryption.
Since rsync, SCP and SFTP protocols are tunneled through SSH, acceleration is reflected even in these protocols.
Update: Because of instability of HPN patch in some cases, we removed this patch from SSH binaries.
We made extensive reconfiguration of arrays stored in Pilsen. We changed the location of the home directories and directories of each virtual organizations.
We recommend users to familiarize themselves with the new structure, which is described in guide.

2 February 2013 was updated FileSender from version 1.1 to 1.5rc1 (https://filesender.cesnet.cz/). Between main advantages of this version belong full HTML5 support and a new languages support.
With support for HTML5 in the browser FireFox or Chrome we can upload or download files without the need to install Adobe Flash Player. Browser Internet Explorer in the most popular versions has still problem with HTML5, so there is still required a presence Adobe Flash Player to upload the file.
Language in FileSender will automatically switch according to language preferences in the browser - to user witch Czech preferences will automatically appears Czech environment, to user with Norwegian preferences will automatically appears Norwegian.
Update was made without losing data - files previously recorded or created invitations are still valid.
